Vacancy Details — CSIR ASO 2026

The 100 posts are split across three cadres. Here's the full category-wise breakdown as per the official notification:

Out of the total 100 vacancies, 7 posts are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), including 2 backlog posts. Cadre allocation — General, Finance & Accounts, or Stores & Purchase — will be decided by CSIR based on merit and the candidate's stated preference. Once allocated, cadre cannot be changed.

Eligibility Criteria for CSIR ASO Recruitment 2026

This recruitment has a very specific eligibility condition. Read it carefully — it's different from a typical open-vacancy notification.

Educational Qualification

You must hold a university degree (any discipline) from a recognised university or institution. The degree should have been awarded on or before the last date of application, i.e., July 13, 2026.

UPSC CSE-2024 Condition — The Key Criterion

This is the unique eligibility gate: you must be a non-recommended candidate of UPSC's Civil Services Examination 2024. That means you appeared in CSE-2024 but were not ultimately recommended for any IAS/IPS/IFS/Group A service by UPSC. Your name must appear on the UPSC Pratibha Setu Portal. If you didn't sit for CSE-2024 at all, you cannot apply for this recruitment, regardless of your qualifications.

Salary and Benefits — CSIR ASO 2026

The pay structure for this post is solid for a Group B Central Government role.

On top of basic pay, selected candidates receive Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and Transport Allowance (TA) at Central Government rates. You're also eligible for medical reimbursement, Leave Travel Concession (LTC), and House Building Advance. CSIR employees may also be allotted residential accommodation — in which case HRA won't be paid separately. The post is governed by the New Pension System (NPS) applicable from January 1, 2004.

Payment is made through SBI Collect (UPI, Debit Card, Net Banking accepted). Note: Application fee is non-refundable. After paying, download the e-Receipt from SBI Collect and upload it in your application before the deadline.

How to Apply for CSIR ASO Recruitment 2026

The entire process is online. No offline or postal applications will be accepted. Here's a step-by-step walkthrough:

Step 1 — Visit the Official Portal

Go to recruitment.csir.res.in or csir.res.in. Use Google Chrome for the best experience.

Step 2 — Register with Your UPSC Roll Number

Click "Apply Online" and register using your UPSC CSE-2024 Roll Number, email address, and mobile number. You'll receive a User ID and password on your registered email and phone. Change your password after first login.

Step 3 — Complete Your Profile

Fill in your basic profile: gender, date of birth, marital status, category, PwBD status (if applicable), Ex-Serviceman status, and CSIR Employee status. Once you lock and verify this profile, these details cannot be changed. So double-check everything before locking.

Step 4 — Fill the Application Form

The online form has seven tabs: Apply, Personal Details, Education, Experience, Additional Details, Uploads, and Preview & Submit. Work through each tab carefully. You can log in and save progress multiple times before final submission.

Step 5 — Upload Documents

Upload your photograph, signature, and all required certificates as per the specifications listed above. Check that your photograph is clearly identifiable and all documents are legible.

Step 6 — Pay the Application Fee

Candidates who aren't fee-exempt should pay ₹500 via SBI Collect. After payment, download the e-Receipt and upload it in the application form before July 13, 2026.

Step 7 — Submit and Save a Copy

Preview your entire application before hitting Submit. Once submitted, no changes are possible. Generate your application number and keep a printed copy for future reference.

Selection Process — CSIR ASO 2026

The selection is a two-stage process based on your existing UPSC CSE-2024 scores:

Stage 1 — Shortlisting Based on CSE-2024 Marks

Applications will be screened and candidates shortlisted for the Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) in a ratio of 1:5 — meaning five candidates per vacancy in each category (minimum five). Shortlisting is based on total marks from Mains + Personality Test in CSE-2024.

Stage 2 — Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)

The CPT is a 1-hour, 100-mark qualifying test held tentatively in Delhi. It tests your proficiency in Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Presentation software — the kind of tasks you'd handle in a central government office. The test is qualifying in nature; final merit is still based on your CSE-2024 scores.

Category-wise minimum marks to qualify the CPT:

Stage 3 — Document Verification

Candidates who qualify the CPT must bring original documents for verification. Final selection and cadre allocation are announced after this stage.

In case of a tie in CSE-2024 scores, CSIR resolves it in this order: higher Mains marks → older date of birth → earlier degree acquisition → alphabetical order of first name.

Preparation Tips for the CSIR ASO Computer Proficiency Test

The CPT is only qualifying — you don't need a high score, just the minimum threshold. That said, a little targeted practice goes a long way. Here's what actually matters:

Word Processing (MS Word)

This is likely the biggest chunk. Practice typing a passage accurately under time pressure. Focus on formatting tasks: tables, headers/footers, page numbering, track changes, and mail merge basics. If you can type 35-40 words per minute without errors, you're in good shape. The bar isn't high — it's an office proficiency test, not a typing championship.

Spreadsheets (MS Excel)

You'll probably be asked to create or format a basic spreadsheet, use SUM/AVERAGE/COUNT functions, and maybe sort or filter data. You won't need pivot tables or advanced formulas. Spend a couple of hours on the basics if you haven't used Excel recently — that's genuinely enough preparation for the CPT level.

Presentations (MS PowerPoint)

Expect a simple task: create a few slides, add content, apply a theme, maybe insert a table or image. Again, this is not testing design skills — it's about basic software familiarity. Run through the standard toolbar options once and you'll be set.

Qualifying Strategy

Since the CPT is only pass/fail for merit purposes, your real focus should be on not making silly mistakes — wrong file saves, misread instructions, panicking under time pressure. Practice on the actual versions of Office software (MS Office 2016 or 2019 are most common in govt. exam centres).
